The Stage Forward Fund: A Fund for Creation, Leadership, and the Next Generation

In celebration of Lisa Rubin’s 10th season as Artistic and Executive Director, the Segal Centre proudly launches a new initiative to invest in bold creation, secure the future of theatre, and uplift Jewish creative leadership.

This new fund reflects the values Lisa has championed in her tenure at the helm of the Segal Centre: risk-taking, inclusivity, and community-rooted storytelling. And it ensures these values will continue to shape our future.

Fund Pillars and Initiatives

1. New Creation: Segal Development Fund

Affirming our long-term commitment to the development of new theatrical work. This stream invests in artists and projects from inception to production, ensuring that new voices are heard, supported, and staged.

2. Artist Advancement Initiatives

Supporting a new generation of talent, these initiatives help local artists gain visibility, experience, and connections they need to thrive. These include:

  • Broadway Café
  • Jewish Arts Mentorship program (J.A.M.)
  • Segal Academy
  • Segal Centre Fringe Jury
  • Canadian Jewish Playwriting Competition
  • Partnership with the Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal’s (PWM) Young Creators Unit and the National Theatre School
  • Audition and acting workshops
  • Annual open calls, apprenticeships, and residencies

3. Jewish Creative Leadership

Lisa believes in paying forward the kind of support she received early in her career – from inspiring leaders like Bryna Wasserman, and generous champions like Alvin and Joel Segal. This stream reflects that commitment by investing in visionary Jewish artists and cultural leaders who are creating meaningful work with courage, purpose, and a sense of community.

It ensures that the future of Canadian theatre is shaped by bold, compassionate, and culturally grounded voices.

Focus areas include:

  • Support for community and independent productions, including promotion, rehearsal space, and rentals
  • Community-engaged storytelling rooted in lived experience and identity
  • Leadership and mentorship opportunities for Jewish-identifying artists
  • Practical training in the business of theatre to foster sustainable careers in the arts
