SYNOPSIS
By Adrian Smith
Duke Frederick has usurped his sister, the Duchess Senior, and banished her and her followers to the forest of Arden. He continues to banish anyone he deems a threat to his fragile leadership. This includes his niece, Rosalind. Hurt by this decision, Celia – Frederick’s daughter – decides to abandon the court and accompany her cousin to Arden.
Rosalind – Senior’s daughter – decides to dress as a man for her own safety while traveling through the forest. However, this proves to be a cumbersome costume, as she encounters Orlando, a love-struck, brave, wrestler with whom she has fallen in love. While dressed as a man, she offers to play a game with Orlando where she pretends to be his love – Rosalind – to cure him of his love-sickness.
While navigating this complicated lie, Rosalind encounters Silvia, a shepherdess who is pained by her unrequited love for Phoebe. Rosalind tries to mend this relationship, but in doing so, Phoebe falls in love with Rosalind, who is still dressed as a man.
When Orlando’s older brother Oliver is also banished to the forest, he stumbles upon Rosalind and Celia. Celia and Oliver lock eyes, falling instantly in love.
Elsewhere in the forest, Touchstone, the jester who accompanies Rosalind and Celia to Arden, has fallen in love with a young farmhand named Andy. However, Andy is not convinced of Touchstone’s commitment to their relationship.
Will love triumph in this feel-good musical comedy? Probably!
WELCOME NOTE
We are very excited to welcome you to Academy Show Season 2023! It is still not lost on us that live theatre is back and we are so excited to be able to entertain so many audiences again. This year, the Academy will be performing 6 different musicals and there will be 24 total performances!
Art Education is even more vital during these challenging times: it helps reinforce how important teamwork and community is, it helps develop a variety of social skills, it helps children take risks and gently pushes them outside their comfort zones. We truly hope you have seen a positive change in your children over the course of this year. Our raison d’être at the Academy is to nurture the love of Arts for the next generation, strengthen our students sense of self-worth and to enjoy the countless benefits in expressing themselves through performance.
We want to thank you, the parents, for accommodating our rehearsal schedules and helping your children prepare. We could not have done it without you! We have been working tirelessly all year to bring these shows to you and look forward to enjoying many more entertaining occasions together in the future.
Enjoy the show!
