As part of the Stage Forward Fund initiative, the Segal Centre is proud to present an 8-week intensive directing workshop led by Trevor Barrette, Montreal-based director, performer, and theatre maker.
This immersive workshop invites emerging directors to refine their artistic process and bring greater clarity and confidence to their work. Through a mix of discussion, analysis, and practical exploration, participants will deepen their understanding of how to move from script to stage with purpose and precision.
Course topics include:
- Script analysis
- Playwright’s conviction vs. director’s intention
- Building the world of the play
- Story structure and staging
- Rehearsal planning
Who should apply:
We’re looking for emerging directors who have previously directed at least one theatre production (independent, festival, or community) outside of an academic setting.
To apply, please complete the application form and upload your CV, bio, and 1-page cover letter outlining your process, your strengths and weaknesses as a director, and what you hope to gain from the course. Your deadline to apply is January 5, 2026.
Cost: $360 for the full program

About Trevor:
Trevor Barrette (he/him) is a theatre maker, director, stage manager and META-nominated writer/composer and producer based in Montreal (Tio’tia:ke/Mooniyang). His joy-forward, metatheatrical, and kaleidoscopic projects aim to inspire creativity and a sense of wonder in his audiences.
He has directed the Fringe hits Captain Aurora, Captain Aurora: A New Dawn, and Memento Mori; The Sages of Chelm and the Yiddish-language premiere of The Great Divide for the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre; and Mark Crawford’s Bed and Breakfast for Hudson Village Theatre (META-nominated for Outstanding Production). He has also worked as an assistant director for the Stratford Festival, the Segal Centre, and Talisman Theatre.
As a writer, he has created several original musicals and most recently produced and directed the world premiere of his meta-romcom Max and Aaron Write a Musical for the Segal Centre (META-nominated for Outstanding New Text).
As a performer, Trevor has had the privilege of working with the National Arts Centre, the Segal Centre, Centaur Theatre, Geordie Theatre, Repercussion Theatre, Persephone Productions, Scapegoat Carnivale, as well as in workshops and presentations with Infinithéâtre, Talisman Theatre, Teesri Duniya Theatre, and Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal.
Dedicated to fostering local talent, he has also served his community as President of the Montreal English Theatre Awards and Vice President of the Quebec Drama Federation and teaches regularly at the Segal Centre Academy and the Geordie Theatre School.
