A Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre production
By Michel Tremblay
Yiddish Translation by Goldie Morgentaler, in collaboration with Pierre Anctil
Directed by Audrey Finkelstein
A million stamps, a little mazel, and a whole lot of tsuris
First performed in Yiddish in 1992 to great acclaim, this iconic translation of one of Quebec’s most celebrated plays – Michel Tremblay’s groundbreaking Les Belles-sœurs – returns to the stage for a new generation. Now, in its 60th anniversary year, the story of Germaine Lauzon and her lively stamping party once again captures the humour, struggles, and resilience of working-class women in 1960s Montreal. Hilarious, heartfelt, and bold, Di Shvegerins is a powerful celebration of language, culture, and sisterhood that continues to resonate today.
LISA'S NOTE
"Les Belles-sœurs in Yiddish is a beautiful celebration of two rich languages and cultures. The relationship between Joual and Yiddish is especially poignant – bringing a unique depth to this iconic story. It’s a testament to the power of language in preserving and honouring the complexities of culture and identity."
DI SHVEGERINS: Michel Tremblay's timeless classic 60 years later - in Yiddish!
