Segal Sessions: Kathia Rock

Aug 29, 2021 - Aug 29, 2021 | Studio

Kathia Rock : UAPEN-NUTA Terre de nos Aïeux
Kathia Rock is a multidisciplinary artist who has been pursuing a career in the performing arts for over 20 years. She has been involved in numerous research and creative projects for which she has received grants and won multiple awards. She has taken part in festivals all over the world; her repertoire includes some forty original songs and thirty or so collaborations or interpretations.

Her musical universe is inspired as much by the urban environment as by her community of Uashat mak Mani-Utenam, near Sept-Îles on the Côte-Nord. With a warm, powerful and transcendent voice, she composes and interprets melodies that draw their sources from the ancestral repertoire of her people, as well as from traditional contemporary folk-rock fusion music. She passes on her culture, from the ancestors to the new generations, through music, storytelling and theatre - in a spirit of coming together.

Everything was white, the crust of the land was white, behind them was their story. Great Manitou help me to follow in the footsteps of Papakassiku, the master of the caribou.

Grandmother Moon guides our steps through our dreams. She listens to our prayers and welcomes us in our doubts, our fears and softens, with a glance.

Could you stop and contemplate the beauty? Could you stop and listen to the sound of my blood flowing?

You, who have seen the change in the paths, you who are the holder of this thousand-year-old knowledge. Do not leave me in doubt of what we were and what we are.

Love, tenderness and thanks to the women who give life.

THE TREE THAT CALLS TO YOU
I would have liked so much to grow, to be the tree that calls to you.
To grow and to soar, I wanted you, my so beautiful life. To lead you to the end of the world on the Mishta Shipu.

SHATSHITUN

Touch me, my moon is full, you will see the pulse of my body drumming in my veins.

UITSHNAN

Mother, stay a little longer.
