Accessibility


The Segal Centre is committed to making our performances and events accessible to all. We offer several services to help our patrons feel welcomed and comfortable. We are always striving to make improvements on how we can make your visit more convenient and are happy to receive feedback.

Please inform a Box Office Associate if you require special assistance or seating when booking your tickets.

We currently offer the following items to assist you while you are attending a performance.

ACCESSIBILITY FOR PEOPLE WITH REDUCED MOBILITY

  • People with reduced mobility can access the Segal Centre through the ramp entrance at 5550 Westbury Ave.
    • The ramp is equipped with handrails.
    • There are automatic door-opening buttons on both the inside and outside of the building.
    • There is a single set of doors at the top of the ramp.
    • The door can open up to 68 inches wide for easy entrance for wheelchairs, walkers, strollers, etc.
  • The front entrance at 5170 ch. de la Côte-Ste-Catherine is at the top of a large staircase.
    • The staircase is partially equipped with handrails.
    • There are two sets of heavy double doors at the top of the stairs.
    • The doors are not equipped with automatic door openers.
    • The doors can open up to 56 inches wide for easy entrance for wheelchairs, walkers, strollers, etc.
  • In the event of snow, our staff makes best efforts to keep both the front and side entrance as clean and clear as possible.

  • The Sylvan Adams Theatre, the Studio, Bar, and the Annex buildings are all wheelchair accessible.
    • Please let Box Office know when booking your tickets if you are low-mobility or if you require assistance so that they can book seats that don’t require the use of stairs.
      • There are two removable seats should you need to remain in your wheelchair.
      • Our Front of House staff can assist you in moving from your wheelchair to a theatre seat.
      • Low-mobility patrons may enter the Sylvan Adams Theatre from the side entrance just past coat check.
    • All floors of the Annex can be accessed by elevator.
    • The ArtLounge, CinemaSpace, rehearsal lab, and dressing rooms are accessible by staircase (equipped with handrails).
      • Wheelchair access to the lower level can be accessed through our delivery dock but requires advanced notice and may not always be available.
    • Wheelchairs and walkers will be stored safely in the coat check corridor under constant usher supervision.
      • Your ticket stub will be attached to your wheelchair or walker to ensure it is returned to its rightful owner.
      • An usher will return your wheelchair or walker directly to your seat following the performance, so please remain seated.
        • An usher can also return your wheelchair or walker directly to your seat at intermission, if requested in advance.
      • A wheelchair is available for use on-site, on a first-come, first-served basis.

PARKING

  • Free parking is readily available on the streets around the Segal Centre for Performing Arts. Please take note of certain restricted hours as indicated on street signs.

  • We highly recommend that any person with reduced mobility be dropped off at the ramp on Westbury prior to parking.

  • Segal Centre subscribers have access to free indoor parking in the adjacent Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA underground parking lot at 5400 Westbury Avenue during performances upon presentation of their subscriber card and after passing a security check of their vehicle:
    • There is an approximately 250-meter distance from the underground parking to the Segal Centre Lobby, which patrons have found to be a 2-10 minute walk.
    • There is an elevator from the basement to the lobby of the YM-YWHA or patrons can walk from the parking lot to the Segal Centre, which involves multiple staircases.
    • Even if you use the elevator, there is still one staircase with seven steps, and no handrail on the last step, leading from the Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA to the Segal Centre.
    • Please do not over fill the elevator; it has a high likelihood of stalling when at overcapacity.
    • The door connecting the Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA to the Segal Centre will be open 1 hour prior to the performance start time.
    • The door connecting the Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA to the Segal Centre will be locked 30 minutes following the performance.

  • There are two spots reserved for disabled parking permit holders by the entrance on Westbury. However, they fill up very quickly.

WASHROOMS

  • There are 2 multiple-stall washrooms (1 for men and 1 for women) in the Segal Centre Lobby
    • They are clearly marked next to the staircase closest to the Box Office Counter.
    • There are wheelchair accessible stalls in both the men and women’s washrooms.
    • There are no automatic doors.
    • The sink and soap dispensers may be out of reach for patrons in wheelchairs.

  • There are 2 multiple-stall washrooms (1 for men and 1 for women) on the lower level just past the ArtLounge
    • The women’s washroom is in the corridor next to the CinemaSpace.
    • The men’s washroom is in the corridor next to the kitchen.
    • There are no wheelchair accessible stalls in either the men’s or women’s washrooms
    • There are no automatic doors.
    • The sink and soap dispensers may be out of reach for patrons in wheelchairs.

  • The Annex building contains two sets of washrooms:
    • There are two single-occupancy washrooms located on the second floor.
    • There are two multiple-occupancy bathrooms (1 for men and 1 for women) on the basement floor.
    • None of the bathrooms in the Annex building have wheelchair accessible stalls or automatic doors.
    • These are only open to the public during Office Hours and are not accessible to the public during performances.

  • There are currently no designated gender-neutral bathrooms at the Segal Centre.

  • All faucets, soap dispensers, and paper towel dispensers at the Segal Centre are manual.

SUPPORT PERSONS

We offer ½ priced tickets (subject to availability) to support persons who accompany patrons with special needs. We consider a support person to be an individual hired or chosen by a person with special needs to provide services or assistance with communication, mobility, personal care, medical needs, or access to goods or services.

DISCOUNTED TICKETS

In addition to our Support Persons, Student, Senior, Group, Class Act, Tuesday Night Live, Subscriber, ASL, and Rush discounts, certain productions offer additional discounts for low-income and marginalized groups. For more information, please contact the Box Office.

GETTING TO THE SEGAL CENTRE

The Segal Centre sends out important notices regarding parking, construction, power and water outages, and road closures via social media and email. To stay up-to-date on all potential advisories please follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and subscribe to Centre Stage newsletter.

In certain extreme circumstances that may affect a performance start time, the Box Office will attempt to contact patrons by phone or email prior to the performance.

There is a phone at the Box Office desk nearest to the Studio available for public use to order taxis. A list with taxi telephone numbers, as well as both Segal Centre addresses is attached to the wall right next to the telephone.

FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED

Assistive listening audio-systems are available for use in the Sylvan Adams Theatre. They are free and available at the Segal Centre Coat Check.

Some of our productions feature amplified sound. To find out if the production you plan on attending is amplified, contact the Box Office.

ASL-INTERPRETED PERFORMANCES  

The Segal Centre offers American Sign Language interpretation for select performances. Tickets can be purchased online or by contacting the Box Office.

SENSORY SENSIBILTY

  • The Segal Centre is a scent-free environment. Scented products such as hair spray, perfume, and deodorant can trigger reactions such as respiratory distress and headaches. Out of respect for our guests and artists, we kindly ask that you refrain from using scented products before attending a performance.

  • Certain performances may feature strobe lights, bright lights, use of theatrical haze, loud noises/music, foul language, adult themes, etc. Please refer to individual show pages for full production details, including run time and intermission information.

  • The Segal Centre is climate controlled, however temperatures may at times vary.

  • Certain productions will have a quiet space for patrons feeling overwhelmed by the production. However, should you at any time feel like you need to step out please do not hesitate to speak to one of our friendly Front of House staff who will be happy to assist you in any way they can.
