BEYOND LANGUAGE (AU-DELÀ DE LA LANGUE), Canada, 2000, 24 min., Directed by Stephanie Finkelstein. In French, English, and Yiddish with English subtitles.

This short film, made by Stephanie Finkelstein as her final film at the Communication Studies Department at Concordia University, portrays the flourishing Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre and its close collaboration with the French community in Montreal, a relationship first established when Yiddish troupes performed at the Monument National at the end of the 19th century.

Winner of the Best Student Documentary Award at the 24th Montreal World Film Festival, the film features interviews with playwright Michel Tremblay, artistic director Bryna Wasserman, historian Jean-Marc Larrue, benefactor Leanor Segal, Pierre Anctil, co-founder of Dialogue St. Urbain, as well as members of the Yiddish Theatre. 

Contains excerpts from the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre’s productions of Les Belles-SoeursDuddy KravitzJust Dora, and On 2nd Avenue.

Stephanie Finkelstein, the film's director and lifelong member of the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre will be on hand for a Q&A after the film.

The Segal Centre’s CinemaSpace presents a delightful series of Yiddish films as part of the International Yiddish Theatre Festival of Montreal. You will find everything from a 2008 Israeli Yiddish film to the last Yiddish film made in Poland in 1948. Also in the Film Festival line-up are recently restored classics, contemporary documentaries on Yiddish theatre and filmed plays. An array of special guest speakers will provide stimulating insights.
