"Flowers At The Window" (approx 25 mins, 2009, Canada, Documentary, English subtitles)
A work in progress by Giovanni Princigalli

HO FATTO IL MIO CORAGGIO (I Got Up My Courage)

Directed by Giovanni Princigalli (Documentary, 50 mins., Canada, 2009. In Italian and English with English subtitles). The filmmaker will be present for a Q&A after the film.

Made with the help of the Italian Consulate of Montreal, the film tells the story of elderly Italian migrant workers who arrived in Montreal between 1950 and 1960, to marry or to reunite with a fiancée they met in Italy. They all came from poor villages from the South of Italy to become married men and women, turning from young people into adults, and also from farmers into workers.

We hear of their farewells to their families and to their village, of the work-related problems when they arrived in Montreal, of happy and sad weddings. Amongst the protagonists there are Carlo, one of the few Italian communists in Montreal, and Lina (rigorously dressed in black according to the tradition of the southern Italian widows), who after 1953 never went back to Italy and every year celebrates the ritual of Saint Anthony in her house in Montreal.

Each story is brought to life with the help of rare and beautiful archive images from the South of Italy as well as from Canada. For every character, a traditional music theme from the South of Italy has been chosen, whose words help to rebuild their story, memories and imagery.
