SCROOGE (1935, U.K., 35 mins) One of the earliest film adaptations of the Charles Dickens classic, 'A Christmas Carol', it features the best ever performance of “Scrooge” by an actor. Most who have ever played the lead role are just too young. Here, Sir Seymour Hicks looks every bit the part and plays it closest to what Dickens had intended. This condensed version is a rare treat and visually portrays a 19th century London shrouded in fog and grit like no other adaptation. Definitely required viewing this time of year and an antidote to those loud crass computer-generated Holiday films offered by the big studios.

SILAS MARNER (1984, U.K. 25 mins.) Directed by Alison Devere. Created by one of the key people behind YELLOW SUBMARINE, this is a truly stunning animated version of George Eliot’s classic Victorian tale of injustice, and finally love and happiness. It’s an ideal Christmas-themed story that will move anyone to tears...even a “Grinch”!
RARG (1989, U.K., 23 mins.) Directed by Tony Collingwood. All is peaceful in the lovely land of Rarg, that is, until an old professor and a tiny baby make an alarming discovery about the nature of dreams. This is one of the dreamiest and most elaborate animated films you will ever see. Beautifully done, it is guaranteed to leave the viewer feeling the “warm fuzzies”.
LADY FISHBOURNE’S COMPLETE GUIDE TO BETTER TABLE MANNERS (1976, Canada, 6 mins.) Directed by Janet Perlman. A super hilarious film featuring four guests of curious demeanor who commit unforgivable acts at the dinner table but are redeemed thanks to Lady Fishbourne's book of eating etiquette. Learn something useful for your Holiday dinners!
THE GREAT TOY ROBBERY (1963, Canada, 7 mins.) Directed by Jeff Hale. Here is another of the great NFB animated classics. Santa battles three bad guys in the far west and is rescued by an unlikely hero in a tall white hat. Being such a funny audience favourite, it is shown annually at Film Society Holiday gatherings.
PLUS a few additional surprise shorts that will make you glad you showed up for all the fun!
