Dybbuk - A Theatre Workshop
A Workshop on Jewish Theatre (in French)
Come explore Jewish theatre through Ansky’s (1863-1920), The Dybbuk. This play presents the Jewish world of popular imagination, marked by the themes of mysticism, the predestination of souls, the Kabbalah, the interpretation of dreams, miraculous rabbis, possession and exorcism. It tells of a thwarted alliance, a broken promise of marriage and unfolds like the Song of Songs. Through a study of the script and its theatrical interpretation, we will arrive at the heart of both Jewish tradition and Jewish theatre.
The workshop will culminate in a lecture-performance created and directed by Sonia Sarah Lipsyc. It will be presented at the Segal Centre as part of the Montreal International Yiddish Theatre Festival. During this presentation, the workshop participants will perform extracts from the play.
Sonia Sarah Lipsyc is an author, director and a specialist in Jewish theatre. She has performed at the Comédie Français in Paris and is the author of «Salomon Mikhoëls ou le testament d’un acteur juif » (Solomon Mikhoels or the Legacy Of A Jewish Actor), Cerf Editions, Paris, 2002.
On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of both the Dora Wasserman Yiddish
Theatre and the Communauté Sépharade Unifiée du Québec, one of
the goals of this workshop is to develop a rapprochement between the Ashkenazi
and Sephardic communities and a mutual understanding of their cultures.
