For 2009-2010 we invite Montreal audiences to join us and a team of incredible artists from around the country to create a thought provoking, inspiring and entertaining season of theatre. These are extraordinary times. The world of theatre, indeed of arts and entertainment, however, has always played a leading role in shepherding us through such periods. It gives us opportunities to laugh, to cry, to sing along, to be swept away if only for an instant.

We will begin with one of the great plays of the twentieth century, Inherit The Wind, which although set in the 1920’s has a profound message that resonates no less powerfully today. In Educating Rita we will begin to explore the relationship of teacher and student and the role of the mentor in our society – themes which are also at the heart of  Geometry of Venice and Old Wicked Songs.  In the spring the Segal Centre will present a rare professional production of a whimsical, delightful and truly touching play, Harvey. We will conclude our season with a celebration of musical theatre, with the Jazz Singer. These plays will be brought to life by the assured artistic leadership of this season’s directors, Greg Kramer, Marcia Kash, Chris Abraham, Martin Faucher and Diana Leblanc.

The theatre must be a welcoming place. It must be a place where we can escape our fears, worries and vulnerabilities and look to one another with a sense of hope and a shared desire for a better future. We work with this in mind here at the Segal Centre. We have chosen this season of plays so as to promote a dialogue between the audience and the artists. As ever, our aim is to present First Class Theatre.
