THE END – (1969, U.S.A., 10 min.) Directed by Rej Rejayan. This creepy experimental narrative short was shot in cinemascope by one of Hollywood’s top lensmen; Dean Cundey, a favourite of both Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter. A wheelchair-bound mother grows murderously jealous of her husband’s affectionate attention towards their teenage daughter.  This is quite possibly the only print that survives of this unknown yet significant work.

CRACK IN THE MIRROR (1960,  U.S., 97 min.) Directed by Richard Fleischer. This is one of the more obscure and ambitious dramatic films by prolific director Richard Fleischer who has brought us 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, THE VIKINGS, FANTASTIC VOYAGE, DR. DOOLITTLE and SOYLENT GREEN. It was written by the producer of over 200 major Hollywood films, Darryl F. Zanuck, with an unusual twist in the narrative. More than just a gimmick, three of the lead actors play two characters each, creating a kind of mirror image of themselves. They are played by beautiful French singer Juliette Greco, Orson Welles and Bradford Dillman who once worked with Fleischer and Welles on a superb little film called COMPULSION.  He was particularly effective in BUG by William Castle and puts in a fine performance in this absorbing drama along with the mostly European cast. Nicely shot entirely in Paris France with widescreen Cinemascope lenses.

Plot: As it opens, in the lower-class working quarter, two seedy young lovers tangle with an older paramour. It is not long before they dispose of the old man by means of crowbar, scarf, handsaw and basket. Enter the second triangle, as the trial begins; an ambitious young lawyer, a sleek sophisticate and her own aging, unwanted paramour, one of France's most brilliant criminal advocates. Music by Maurice Jarre.

Offered here is a cinemascope projection that will look absolutely amazing on our wide screen.
