Centre Updates
Ben's Pen / June 2010
Here it is. The breakdown, the goods…the stuff that matters. Items to make you proud, events to think about, golden nuggets to make you smile when that annoying sound on your computer says, “you’ve got mail.” Welcome to Updates from Ben’s Pen, news you can use from The Segal Centre for Performing Arts.
The Jazz Singer
Special it was to have Joel Raphaelson as guest speaker for the final Sunday @ the Segal of our season - providing a direct link to his father Samson - as the Segal Centre presents the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre’s production of The Jazz Singer, adapted from S. Raphaelson’s 1925 original play by Elan Kunin and directed by Bryna Wasserman. With music and lyrics also by Kunin, choreography by Jim White, set design by John C. Dinning, costumes designed by James Lavoie and John Gilbert as musical director and band leader, this all new musical promises to provide a month of sheer pleasure and musical entertainment we’ll all want to experience…over and over again! Here’s a clip to whet your appetite, just click the photo.

Yo Ez, what’s screening?
According to the man with the tin cans here’s what’s flickering in CinemaSpace:
The “Socalled” Movie runs till June 10. Interesting dude, cool movie.
On June 9th, all you Jazz Singer and Al Jolson fans will certainly not want to miss Cinéclub: The Film Society’s presentation of “Jolson and The Jazz Singer: Movies Learn To Talk (1900-1950)“, a special collection of short segments, put together to celebrate Al Jolson and how a film that he starred in created a bigger revolution in movies than even colour or 3-D. Or to paraphrase the great Jolson: “You ain’t seen nothing yet.”
June 23rd, Cinéclub: Film Society presents The Luck of Ginger Coffey (1964) - An ambitious Irishman emigrates with his wife and daughter to Montreal with plans of becoming a successful journalist. He soon discovers that it takes more than luck to make it in this hostile foreign land.
And in July, Exocentric Productions presents: Exported! 7 Short Films from Here and There. Seven short films from seven filmmakers throughout North America.

And the winners are….
Congratulations to Corinna Groenendaal and Jacob Temper, our exit survey winners! They each won a pair of tickets to go see next season's opening play, Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge! We love those exit surveys, so keep ‘em coming. Tell us what you think, how you heard about us, what you’d like to be seeing and hearing for a chance to win! We love to hear from you so stay in touch on Facebook and Twitter or on MySpace and YouTube.
I’ll see you in ….
Sometimes we live in moments larger than ourselves. Or sometimes we’re lucky enough to be in the presence of those whose impact on us, be it personally or collectively, is profound, but I mean really. I recently attended a concert featuring one of the greatest folk artists of the twentieth century, Pete Seeger. The evening ended with the 92 year old Seeger leading an all star lineup and sold out audience in“Irene, Goodnight.” Yet despite his age and his singing barely a whisper, the moment was electric…big.
We strive here at the Segal Centre to create such moments, to present for you, with you, opportunities to see life as something larger than just ourselves. Artistic moments that when experienced live, together, make our experience of life that much more profound and inspire us to believe that our dreams can become reality.
Here’s to the incredible artistic season that was and to the one that we will soon share and experience together with you.
Well that’s your final Update of the season. Thanks for reading everyone. Have a great summer and see you soon! Till then, thanks Pete…”Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene, I’ll see you in my dreams….”
